Germany prides itself on maintaining a continuous and predictable foreign policy, regardless of who is in power. There are no sudden shifts. German politicians usually are responsible and prioritize the country over personal interests.
The new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, is a staunch supporter of Ukraine. He promised to deliver “Taurus” long-range air-to-surface cruise missiles to Ukraine.
In addition to his coalition partner from the SPD, Merz can also count on the votes of the Green Party when it comes to decisions about increasing support for Ukraine. There is a solid majority in the Bundestag, the German parliament, in favor of providing more support to Ukraine.
We now have the official preliminary results, and the future German government will be formed by a coalition of the CDU (Christian Democrats) and the SPD (Social Democrats).
